Latvia is a Northern European country in the Baltic constituency. It is surrounded to the north by Estonia to the south by Lithuania, and to the east both by and the Russian Federation across the Baltic Sea to the west lies Sweden. The Latvians are a Baltic people intimately connected to the Lithuanians, with the Latvian language sharing many similarities to Lithuanian. Today the Latvians and Lithuanians are the only surviving members of the Baltic peoples and Baltic languages of the Indo-European family. The modern name of Latvia is originated from the ancient Latvian name Latvji, which may have originated from the word Latve which is a name of the river that presumably flowed through what is now eastern Latvia. Latvia lies on the East European Plain. It contains of fertile, low-lying plains, largely enclosed by forest, mostly pines, and the highest point being the Gaiziņkalns. Phytogeographically, Latvia is situated between the Central European and Eastern European provinces of the Circumboreal Region within the Boreal Kingdom. According to the WWF, the land of Latvia belongs to the ecoregion of Sarmatic miscellaneous forests. The Latvian weather is humid, continental and moderate owing to the nautical influence of the Baltic Sea. Summers are warm and the weather in spring and autumn comparatively mild, yet, the winters can be tremendous due to the northern location The Latvians and Lithuanians, linguistically and culturally related to each other, are descended from the Balts, an Indo-European people and culture. The peoples comprising the Baltic States have together populated the eastern Baltic coast for millennia, even though not always quietly in olden times, over which period their populations: Estonian, Latvian, and Lithuanian, have remained extraordinarily stable within the approximate territorial boundaries of the current Baltic States. While divide peoples with their own customs and traditions, historical factors have introduced artistic commonalities across and differences within them. The Latvian and Lithuanian languages make up the group of Baltic languages which belongs to the Indo-European language family. The Estonian language and the almost vanished Livonian language, on the other hand, are not Indo-European languages and in its place fit in to the Baltic-Finnic subgroup of the Finno-Ugric languages, sharing close racial and historical ties with the Finnish language and people Latvia has taken a honorable place in my reminiscences among with the other places I've ever visited and I would with pleasure visit this country once again in the nearby time. There are lots of excursions and guided tours approximately Riga and other cities. Most of them are hold in English, but I've seen also Germans peaking guides. These are mostly attractive young ladies, sometimes dressed in nationwide outfits and accompanied by quite a lot of actors, the theater some scenes from the medieval times of this land. |
